Putnam County Golf Course to host 4th Annual Putnam County Amateur Championship August 12th
On Saturday, August 12, 2017, Putnam County Golf Course will host the 4th Annual Putnam County Amateur Championship. Located in Mahopac, New York, the challenging 18-hole championship course will welcome golfers from throughout the northeast region for a chance at the title. Any individual with a USGA Handicap is welcome to play and enjoy a day out on the picturesque Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac.
The Putnam County Amateur Championship was created by Jim Woods, the PGA Golf Professional at Putnam County Golf Course.
"Four years ago I decided to create an event that would bring back competitive golf and comrade-re here at Putnam,” says Woods. “There were never any events other than golf leagues that offered this sort of competition. This event was created for golfers of all ages and skill levels. Therefore, we have several different divisions to accommodate every type of golfer.”
The Championship includes an 18-Hole Stroke Play with USGA Rules. A USGA – GHIN handicap is required to participate. There will be a non-handicap division for those without. To ensure a fun and exciting event for all, golfers will be split up by age, gender and ability. Divisions will play from designated tee markers: the men will be on the white, ladies on red, and seniors aged 60 or older on gold. Winners of each division will be presented with a trophy and Putnam Gift Cards. The deadline to enter is Thursday, August 10th at 6:00 pm and the entry form can be accessed on Putnam County Golf Course’s website.
Woods’ desire to provide a completive golf event at Putnam County Golf Course has paid off. “Having been behind the ropes before at the highest levels on the PGA tour, I know how awesome it is to compete,” he says. “I look at all of the people that are trying to win this event and I know that this may be the biggest event of their life. Therefore, it is important to run it like a PGA tour event so everyone can have the full experience of true golf competition.”
Last year, William Jones Jr. won the Men’s Championship by 1 under par 71. Michael Gemi won the trophy to the Putnam Senior Championship after outlasting Robert Anderson in a three hole playoff. The Men’s Callaway Division Champion title was presented to Michael Sbarra and the Senior Callaway Division winner was Frank Morelli.
“The fields have been growing every year which is great to see,” continued Woods. “We have a trophy that sits in the lobby with all of the winners’ names on it so hopefully that will remain part of the clubs history even when I am gone.
Inaugural Putnam County Amateur Championship Winners in 2014 were Andrew Lord and Senior Champion, Peter Choma. The 2015 2nd Annual Championship was won by Eric Jaffee with Ed Lapine taking first in the Senior Division.
The 2nd Annual Putnam County Amateur Championship was awarded to Eric Jaffee with one over par 73.
“This will be the fourth year of the Putnam County Amateur and I am always excited to see people working on their games leading up to it,” Woods tells. “Golfers are measured by nothing other than the score that they shoot so we shall see who the next champion is on August 12, 2017.”
